The "National Project for Livestock Breeding in the Hands of the Public," coordinated by the General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies (TAGEM) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, is considered the most comprehensive breeding project in the history of the republic. The project, led by Associate Professor Dr. Emre Şirin from the Faculty of Agriculture at KAEÜ, focuses on the "Improvement of Karayaka Sheep and Hair Goat Breeds in the Hands of the Public" in Amasya Province. Rektor Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kasım Karahocagil, along with Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Şimşek and other faculty members, visited the project area.

The "National Project for Livestock Breeding in the Hands of the Public" involves the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, universities, breeder associations, and livestock breeders. Over 1 million small ruminants nationwide are included in the project, with efforts focused on breeding them under breeder conditions. Associate Professor Dr. Emre Şirin from the Faculty of Agriculture leads the project, which was initiated in Amasya Province in 2011. It was reported that significant improvements have been achieved in fertility and live weight in the animals involved in the "Improvement of Karayaka Sheep and Hair Goat Breeds in the Hands of the Public" projects under the project. Professor Şirin also mentioned that the project contributed to the preservation of these breeds in their pure form, stating that approximately 4 million TL in support payments had been made as of 2023. During his visit to the project area, Professor Mustafa Kasım Karahocagil stated that, when considering the income generated from improvements in fertility and live weights, the project contributes approximately 8 million TL annually to the economy of the breeders involved. Karahocagil also received information about other developments in the project and exchanged ideas with sheep and goat breeders during the visit.
