Kırşehir Ahi Evran University has implemented a “Smoke-Free Campus” policy to promote healthy living, increase environmental awareness, and strengthen social consciousness. As part of this initiative, restrictions on the use of tobacco and tobacco products have been introduced, and the Smoke-Free Campus Directive was officially approved by the University Senate today. The policy aims to provide a healthier, cleaner, and safer environment for all students, academic staff, and administrative personnel. With the Smoke-Free Campus, the university seeks not only to create a tobacco-free environment, but also to prevent non-smokers from starting to smoke, support those trying to quit by making access to tobacco more difficult, and contribute to reducing tobacco addiction. The initiative also targets minimizing the harmful effects of passive smoking, preventing the risks posed by tobacco products, spreading awareness of healthy living, and creating a smoke-free environment for future generations.
As part of the Smoke-Free Campus policy, the use of tobacco and tobacco products will be prohibited in all indoor spaces and most common areas across the university. Tobacco use will only be allowed in designated outdoor areas, which will be clearly selected in line with the goals of a smoke-free campus. In this way, a smoke-free lifestyle will be promoted while allowing tobacco users to meet their needs in controlled and limited spaces.
With the Smoke-Free Campus policy, the university aims to create a healthier working and learning environment for students and staff, improve air quality, reduce cigarette butt waste and prevent environmental pollution, minimize the health risks faced by passive smokers, support efforts to decrease tobacco addiction and encourage those who wish to quit, and further strengthen the university’s identity as a health-focused and environmentally responsible institution that sets an example for society.
Rector Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kasım Karahocagil emphasized the importance of the Smoke-Free Campus policy for Kırşehir Ahi Evran University. He expressed his belief that a smoke-free campus will provide students and staff with a cleaner and healthier living environment. Rector Karahocagil also noted that the policy would help prevent addictions on campus, stating, “I believe this initiative will serve as a model for both our university and our city.”
